Discovering Senales

From the vineyards to the Ice Age glaciers: a wide variety of alpine environments make up the landscapes that frame Schnalstal, a small South Tyrol municipality in the valley of the same name. An enchanting destination offering a family-friendly combination of nature and attractions.

Dominating the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley, is the Juval Castle, residence of mountaineer Reinhold Messner and site of one of his museums: the Messner Mountain Museum. A place that reflects a spiritual approach to the world of the mountains through an original collection of masks, frescoes, sculptures and an adventure library.

Among the attractions in the area, a trip to the ArcheoParc of Madonna di Senales is a must. Here, you will discover the world of Ötzi, thanks to the reconstruction of a village dating back to the Copper Age, similar to that in which The Iceman may have lived. Children can try out unique experiences like lighting a fire, working with clay or using a bow and arrows. Ötzi was found near Lake Vernago, an emerald green body of water with marvellous trails leading off it. An interesting fact: when the lake’s water level is low, the roof of a bell tower, which was submerged when the dam was built, can be seen emerging from the water. From the lake, you can take the trail that leads to the place where Ötzi was found: the Tisenjoch mountain pass.
