Legends from Sardinia

leggende-sardegnaThe smallest and legendariest kingdom in the world.
Impressive with its cliffs hundreds of meters high, the island of Tavolara, 4 km far from the coast of Porto S. Paolo, in the north-east of Sardinia, is the smallest kingdom in the world.
Fantastic animals, shepherds-kings, underground roads, subterranean weapons, fill the island with mystery and transform Tavolara also in the kingdom of legends.
Perhaps because of a realm befits the most precious metals, goats with gold teeth would graze on its peaks.
In the past the island also hosted the giant mice, or more likely (given to the fossil traces) mammalians of the specie of Prolagus that, extinct million years ago, would be exceptionally survivors in Sardinia.
In the waters of Tavolara the monk seal would have lived, rare pinniped that would have also been sighted in recent years.
Water would also set a legend who wants submarines and nuclear weapons placed under the island, a legend with an easy interpretation, given that since the mid-sixties of the last century the east side of Tavolara is hosting a NATO base.
Into the sea another legend lies and transforms a beach rock with a geological origin in a mysterious "Roman road".
Who knows if right following these square blocks the first inhabitant of the island, Bertoleoni Joseph, owner of flocks, reached the island at the beginning of the XIX century.
His son Paul, shepherd he too, became king on the perhaps ironic nomination by Carlo Alberto of Savoy, king of the kingdom of Savoy, who was visiting the island.
What is certain is that at Buckingham Palace between the images of all the royal dynasties of the world, at the end of the XIX century even a picture of the neo royal family of Tavolara was added.
Tonino and Maddalena, the last descendants and owners of two restaurants in Tavolara, will gladly share with you the secrets of the smallest and legendariest kingdom in the world.
A kingdom that, a few miles far from Golfo Aranci, will enchant you.
