If a famous person announces his visit to Fiuggi, known thermal resort of the Italian region of Lazio, a fervent and uncontrollable enthusiasm takes possession of its inhabitants.
At least judging by the legends that there people tell.
The biggest drinker of the water of Anticoli di Campagna (Fiuggi was so called until 1911) was Pope Boniface VIII.
To him, no coincidence, the baths of Fiuggi are dedicated.
Suffering from kidney stones, the Pope knew well and ordered in big amount this water (considered miraculous just for the treatment of that disease) and in order to fully exploit the therapeutic properties of the drink, he decided, one day at the end of the XIII century, to reach the thermal resort.
Having had news of the visit, the population grew so fervent that, discussing the best way to welcome the Pope, the atmosphere became incandescent.
All agree that they would have organized a ceremony of water offering.
All disagree on which 'contrada' would have had the honor of offering the bottle to the Supreme Pontiff.
To dissolve definitively the delicate question, five riders, representing the 'contradas', challenged each other to a tournament.
In May 2008 in Fiuggi the Palio of Boniface VIII has been established to recall (with enthusiasm!) the visit of the Pope.
If we make another leap in time to the early nineteenth century, we see another great historical figure announcing his visit to Anticoli di Campagna: Napoleon Bonaparte.
In that occasion the enthusiasm we know concentrated all in the act of creation of a tireless painter who, overnight, created a portrait of the leader to decorate the room of the Palazzo Falconi that was supposed to accommodate him.
But that did not since Napoleon went not to Fiuggi and left only his shadow, as the painter said, in what today is called the "Hall of Napoleon".
Illustrious and unillustrious Ladies and Gentlemen and Kids, maybe do not send in your name, but let yourself influence by the enthusiasm of the staff of our Italy Family Hotels of Fiuggi!
