Kids’ food on holiday can be health

Kids need good nutrition even more than adults: they are still growing, every day. Parents should offer lots of variety in the diet (carb, protein, vitamins etc.). Kids should at least have a taste of all of them. Lots of eating habits are formed during early childhood: so children who try new tastes and get used to them will have a balanced diet as adults without needing to think about it.

A holiday in Italy is an opportunity to find healthy food for children much more easily.

Italian cooking makes more use of vegetables (and vitamins) than ours. The Mediterranean diet is based on healthy carb such as pasta, which almost all children love. And many an Italian speciality is based on fish and healthy olive oil.  What can you do if your tired-of-vitamins offspring only want chips, sweets and fast food, despite all your well-meant efforts?

The hotel co-operative Italy Family Hotels has found a solution to this problem, at least for the duration of your holiday. The hotels cook following a cleverly devised recipe programme named "mangio, gioco e mi diverto", in English “Eat, Play and Have Fun”. In co-operation with a renowned nutritional institute, the “ Studio di Consulenza Nutrizionale” the hotel group has developed tasty aged-based healthy kids' menus, which are in fact most appealing to children. Let’s conclude with some tips to encourage your children to love good food:

    • Start small: it is more likely that children will try new kinds of vegetable if at first they’re only served as a small portion, maybe together with a vegetable they already like, or with noodles or mash. Do make sure that they are hungry first: that way they’re more likely to want to eat something so will attempt the new challenge.
    • Set a good example. Cook healthy but tasty, so that you like the food yourself - If your child sees that you are only eating healthy because you “ought to”, he or she will not be enticed.
    • “The sizzle sells the steak“: healthy food for children just has to look appealing. It’s simple. If you don’t have the time to cook, at least chop up some fresh fruit and vegetables into small and colourful pieces and arrange them attractively on the plate. That would be a good start.
