Beneficial Toys for Children

Children’s playing is not a luxury; it is important, essential for their development. They emulate their environment, process information and develop creativity. A playful child is a healthy child.

Toys for children ages 0 - 3
Tiny babies need no toys. You can create your own simple toys for children aged 3 months to a year: tie balloons to a string that babies can practice reaching and kicking, a plastic bottle filled with small shells as a rattle or colourful newspaper to tear for older babies.

Store bought playthings should be items your child can grasp, look at and touch. They should crackle, rattle as well as have an interesting texture and striking colours. Examples are crinkle books, rattles with colourful balls, a cuddle blanket with glittery animal face. A rule of thumb: the smaller the child, the bigger the toy. Be careful that your baby does not put anything in its mouth that doesn’t belong there.

From one year on your child begins to show interest in many things: stacking building blocks, the first picture books, finger games, and hide and seek for example. A good source of inspiration for parents at this age are books with songs, nursery rhymes and games (for example of games played with child riding on your knees). Pull toys encourage walking and movement as well as the first ball. One or more stuffed animals or dolls begin to populate either the child’s or the doll’s bed. Children enjoy the first attempts at colouring with thick crayons. Summer is a good time for introducing games with water and sand toys. Household object also hold fascination for a child: an eggbeater or cooking spoon can produce a very effective (and loud) noise when used to beat on an overturned pot. Turning an old-fashioned hand mixer is fun. Children discover role playing between the ages of two and three and enjoy playing these in the pre-school phase.

Kindergarten children
Your child needs varying stimulus at this age depending on the themes that are current to them. Observe your child well: what does he or she talk about often, when do his or her eyes light up, where do they have fun? It could be the fire brigade, last week’s visit to the doctor, life in the country, shopping or getting dressed. There are many age appropriate books and tools for any topic that can allow your child to explore, learn and experience. If your child enjoys crafts, provide child scissors, non-toxic glue, modelling clay and other materials. If your child enjoys physical activity, encourage it with a roller scooter or running bike. This teaches your child balance for bike riding later. Simple board games like “concentration” or dominos are fun at this age and develop further skills at the same time.

Most importantly, your child learns playfully. It is not important for your child to recognize the first letters. Read to your child and they will soon realize that the great stories they love are created from those letters and they will want to learn them on their own.
Meet your child’s need to play and buy those games and toys that they really need.

Primary School children
Children need to play to relax after school. Make sure that there is enough physical activity to counter the sitting the kids have to do at school. Games that encourage movement include roller skates or skateboards, a bicycle or the trendy slackline ropes to string from trees or posts in your garden for children to balance on. Outdoor games for two people such as softball tennis, table tennis of badminton are also fun for kids.

At this time many children also begin to discover computer games. It is best to examine the games alone at first(all levels) and observe your child as they begin to play. Make sure your child does not spend every afternoon at the computer. Encourage romping indoors and out.

By the time they have reached school, many children start to discover their hobbies. Maybe they start learning a musical instrument, or exploring nature or an acrobatic workshop. Support your child in these activities even if you yourself do not share their interest. Not every hobby should match a future occupation- thankfully your child still has a lot of time for that. regalo
