Zoos worth seeing in Italy

parco zoo safari There are several interesting zoos in Italy; particularly safari parks. Aquariums and dolphin shows also offer insight into the exciting world of underwater creatures. Following are tips that are worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood with children.

 

Zoosafari, Apulien
This enourmous zoo is located in southern Italy between Brindisi and Bari. It is one of the largest zoos in Europe: 1,700 animals (200 species) located on 140 hectares. The animals roam in the Mediterranean Macchia landscape in the large safari zone, a dolphin show, an exotarium where snakes and tortoises call their home and the typical zoo with hundreds of song birds among others.

Visits to the safari are only allowed by car (rental cars available), the zoo can be visited on its own. The amusement park Fasanolandia is adjacent to the zoo and can also be visited separately.

Giardino zoologico di Pistoia
A zoo near Pisa: located on seven hectares with ca 400 animals – reptiles, mammals, and insects. The Giardino zooligico di Pistoia offers guided tours nightly (1 hour duration from 22:00) where nocturnal animals can be observed.

Bioparco, Roma
Rome´s zoo offers a nice diversion for children during your city tour. Opened in 1911, renovated, the zoo houses 1,000 animals in modern, species appropriate facilities.

Oltremare in Riccione
Big dolphin pool and aquarium (all together 100 metre square) with dolphin shows, displays Mediterranean species and the rich water fauna of the nearby Po delta. Exhibit showing the earth’s development and the animal kingdom, reptile house and an Exotarium.
