Celtic LegendsKing Arthur His adventures have been told in England since the sixth century: Arthur was crowned King of England and Wales at the age of 15. He gathered his knights around a round table- there the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table were born. King Arthur fought many successful battles in all of Europe and even conquered a giant! The wizard Merlin doubted that King Arthur ever died.
Merlin Merlin is another important figure that features in the Celtic legends. He could predict the future. He is said to be responsible for the meeting of King Arthur’s parents. He was King Arthur’s teacher and gave him the charge to search for the Holy Grail. According to legend, Merlin transferred the remarkable Stonehenge from Ireland to England through magic. He also supposedly never died a natural death; instead disappeared in another world or resides today in a palace on the ocean floor.
MythologyThe “old“ Greeks and the “old“ Romans lived thousand of years ago. They believed in many gods, that were partly related to each other and they told stories about them. Zeus(Greek god) Zeus was the highest god in Greek mythology. He dethroned his godly father, the king, to become king of the gods. He fought many wars against titans and gigantes. He then chose twelve gods from among his siblings and children with whom he watched over the world from Mount Olympus. That is why they are referred to as the Olympian Gods. His brother Hades ruled the underworld, his brother Poseidon the sea.
Athena(Greek goddess) She was Zeus’ daughter and inherited the gift of wisdom from him. According to legend, Athena and Poseidon fought over the protectorate of a city. They placed a bet: whoever gave the city a more useful gift, would win. Poseidon gave a fountain (a spring) from which flowed only salt water; Athena an olive tree with its wood and fruit. She won and became the protectorate of the city Athens.
Apollo(Greek and Roman god) Apollo was the god of light and the arts like music and song in both Greek and Roman mythology. The Delphi Oracle, the most important holy sanctuary of the ancient Greek, was consecrated to him. He also resided on Olympus and was one of the twelve main gods.
Bacco(Roman god) Bacchus, a son of Zeus, was the god of fertility, especially of winegrowing. He was also the god of flowers that brought spring. Bacchus is usually represented as a bearded man with a band or ivy crown on his head and a Roman glass in his hand.
Saturno(Roman god) Saturn was the god of the fields and is traditionally depicted with a sickle or scythe.
Marte(Roman god) Mars was a god in ancient Italy, particularly Rome. In the legend of the founding of Rome Mars is the father of the twins Romulus and Remus that founded Rome. Mars is seen as the god of war. Mars usually carries a lance and is also often shown with a helmet, shield and a sword. The red planet Mars is named after this god.
