 People think on rare occasions at the magic of language (unless they make a job related to rhetoric). One of these is motherhood, when the "mama" or the "baba" become the news of the day, or of the week, and there is surprise in following with trepidation every smallest language progress of the child. Language learning develops over the first five years of life and, like a true path, has its milestones. Let us cover them together. Already during the first 6 months the baby emits a sound, like "ooh" or "aah", and he cries at every loud noise. From 6th to 9th month he emits different sounds with two syllables: it is lallation time. He looks for the source of every noise. If called by his name, he answers (in his own way). From 9th to 12th month he uses the voice to draw attention and pronounces the first individual words: they are still protowords, devoid of meaning and intention. The nursery rhymes give him a lot of pleasure and, like games, are a source of learning. It is between 12th and 15th month that the transition between the prelanguage and language occurs: he uses the first real words when with the same sequence of sounds he refers always to the same object. It anwers to his name even though called in a low voice, he performs simple orders. From 15th to 24th month his vocabulary consists of about 20 words, he can use 2 of them together, he performs complex orders. From 2 to 3 years his vocabulary increases from 250 to 1000 words, he can use 4 of them together, he distinguishes sounds and begins to ask some questions. From 3 to 4 years with 5 words he explains the occured events, speaks in a comprehensible way, may have difficulty with "r" and "l", he understands the conversation. From 4 to 5 years he comprehends the dialogue in a low voice, he speaks with all sounds, rarely the problem with "r" and "l" persists, he can tell. Clearly related to hearing, the language has a continuous development, but what happens in the first five years is crucial.
