What is epidural?

In a great part of Europe it is already largely practiced since a long time, and there are always more and more women also in Italy that ask to profit of it. In more and more hospitals it is by now guaranteed, on demand, day and night and without additional costs.

But what is the epidural? Simplifying, it can be defined as a "help" to relieve the pain in the phase of the suffering, especially in the cases in which this prolongs him for long times. Technically it is a small intervention of located anaesthesia, which is made with the insertion of a small mobile catheter among two vertebrae in the lumbar zone.

Already after a few instants the effect anaesthetic, located to "put to sleep" the painful uterine contractions, appears, with a big benefit for the woman in the delicate phase of the suffering. A greater knowledge of the argument and the gradual diffusion in the principal maternity points is now finally winning the unjustified scepticism, what in Italy has always countersigned the thinking about epidural use.

The possibility of negative effects are in fact reduced to a low percentage of risk, also because it is practiced by anaesthetists specialized in the "therapy" epidural.
