What episiotomy is?

An episiotomy is a minor surgical procedure performed during birth to facilitate the exit of the infant and to avoidlaceration. The operation consists of making a small incision in the vaginal wall and on the muscles of the perineum that are stitched as soon as the birth ended. This technique, used primarily to prevent serious lacerations when the child has problematic positions, is the subject of debate about the pros and cons. Even if it can be useful in some critical situations, studies have shown that spontaneous small laceration heal better than episiotomy incisions, which often cause pain and negative consequences in the long term.
