 Think about a party for the child who will be born… Only yesterday your best friend has told you that she is pregnant and you are so happy for her that already you would like to make a gift to the future baby. But you know well that you should limit to look at that nice hat in the shop-window and that, against bad luck, you should wait until the birth has successful ended before you can pay homage to the newborn and worthily celebrate the mother. So in Italy we use and woe to transgress! If you had lived in England, in the United States or in South America you would have had to wait less time. There there is the widespread tradition of organizing a party for the child when the incoming expecting mother enters the seventh month. It is the custom of the baby shower. Nothing to do with the “doccia” with which automatically Italian translate the word shower, the baby shower is a party, usually a surprise, organized by the female friends of the future mother. A funny afternoon only for women, the entry is also forbidden to the future dad. After fixing the date (between the seventh and the ninth month) an dthe place (a night-club or a friend’s house), the organizers proceed to think about the menu (complete but light), to organize the games and to work on decorations. To celebrate the long-awaited baby, it is the custom that every guest arriveswith a gift. Over the years some variants have been added to the traditional version: the party in the workplace, the family party, and last and recent the party with couples (also with male friends). Besides while in the past the baby shower was ordered only at the first pregnancy, now it is also organized for the following. A nice glass of milk to toast and amusing but not too physical games, so you have fun in the baby shower for the joy of the mother and child in the belly. And who knows if, given the international echo of J. Lo’s baby shower, the Italian expectant mothers will not receive a strange and insistent call for exit from her friends... Although, in front of the strength of ancient tradition against bad luck, we are inclined to believe that we should wait a lot of time before we will see in home furnishing stores a baby shower list.
