What is the Carnival?
Carnival is a period of the year, during which people celebrate, organize masked feasts, costume balls, do jokes and pranks. In ancient times, the civil rules and the laws were disregarded ...
it says that the king becomes a subject, the beggar is crowned King of Carnival and everybody goes around masked or hidden behind a mask, doing what normally nobody does.
During the Carnival, conventions and social norms change, they are distorted and forgotten by tacit agreement. That's why at carnival every joke is permitted... don't blame!
Carnival precedes Ash Wednesday and Lent. The Carnival takes place in Winter (in northern hemisphere), but the date is variable, because it is linked to the date of the Christian Easter.
Carnival begins on the day after the Epiphany and ends on Fat Tuesday, the eve of Ash Wednesday.
The highlight is just the Tuesday. Every country has its customs: someone celebrates the Carnival only the last week before Lent, some other just organize masked balls, other masked parade in the streets...tell us how you use to celebrate Carnival in your country!
