Tocatì

 23, 24, 25 September 2011

Verona – Historical centre

Games from all over the world combine! This is what happens in Verona between the 23rd and 25th of September when there will be, once again, the annual event known as Tocatì, a festival of traditional street games from all regions in Italy and from various countries around the world.

Small and large squares, streets and alleys in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy host groups of keen players who are happy to share in the traditions and age-old games of their homelands and to tell us about their history and customs through 50 traditional games. There will be not one guest of honour this year, but several special guests in the form of the countries of Mexico, Brazil, Portugal, Sweden, Congo, Iran  and Algeria.Games for children and adults will be played eight hours a day to entertain the general public, and anyone who wishes to take part and learn will be welcomed with pleasure by the players who are willing to share their knowledge and passion. In addition to the shows, there will be many social events with open-air concerts in the streets and aperitifs in the squares and taverns, and there will a good few tournaments improvised by new enthusiasts. There will even be meetings and conferences with directors, psychologists, anthropologists, ludologists and, this year, the first conference of the International Traditional Sports and Games Association where dons and experts discuss the importance of games and traditional games, in particular, as an essential element of cultural heritage. From spinning tops to marbles and the pirlì (Sardegna) to the stù (Abruzzo) and the p’zz’ncantò (Basilicata), there are many traditional games that still exercise a great, irresistible allure...For the occasion there will be a special ferry service for visiting Verona on the Adige, while at the Cucine del Festivale (Festival kitchens) and Osteria del gioco (games inn) you can taste typical and international wine and food products, to savour the flavours of many diverse traditions.A detailed program is available on the website www.tocati.it; alternatively, you can contact the Associazione Giochi Antichi (www.associazionegiochiantichi.it), who organizes the Festival with the Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Verona (+39 045 8077082). Have fun!
