Christmas Markets |

Alto-Adige
Trentino Alto-Adige is the region most noticeably influenced by Northern Europe with respect to its very traditional Christmas markets. They are so carefully arranged and decorated, and have such a special atmosphere that they have become a real tourist attraction in their own right. There are many opportunities at Christmas time to go in search of a present to put under the tree, or a particular type of decoration: those little things that add to the special atmosphere and pleasure of Christmas. The markets can be found all over the region, but those which have gained a reputation as the most important are in the town of Bolzano, in Piazza Walther, from November 27th to December 23rd 2011 (open from 10:00 to 19:30, and from 9:00 to 19:30 on Sundays and holidays), and at Bressanone, in Piazza Duomo, from November 27th 2011 to January 6th 2012 (open from 10:00 to 19:30 during the week and from 9:30 to 19:00 on Sundays and holidays). You can go hunting for surprise gifts and bargains, and enjoy a “brezel” and a glass of mulled wine (known here as “Gluhwein”) in the Piazza Municipio at Brunico, from November 26th 2011 to January 6th 2012 (open Monday to Friday from 14:30 to 19:00, and weekends and holidays from 10:00 to 19:00). At Merano, the Christmas market takes place from November 27th 2011 to January 6th 2012, (Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 19:30 and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 19:30). Finally, there is Vipiteno, where the traditional Christmas market is held from November 25th 2011 to January 6th 2012 (open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00). It really is worthwhile braving the winter cold to enjoy the festive atmosphere of these markets. One thing’s for sure: you won’t come home empty handed!
