From Chestnut Husk to Flour |
|
An appointment with one of the most typical of autumn fruits takes place every year in the municipality of San Godenzo, in the province of Florence. Three events celebrate the development of the sweet chestnut, from prickly husk to the many delicious products obtained from this adaptable fruit. The first dates to note are October 16th, 23rd and 30th, with the "Cammino dei Marroni" (Chestnut Route) and the traditional “Marronata di Casale” (Chestnut Paste Celebration). There is then the “Ballottata” chestnut fair at Castagno d'Andrea; and finally, in December, the "Dal Riccio alla Farina" (From Husk to Flour) festival at San Godenzo. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know the wonderful flavour of chestnuts and of PGI-status products from Mugello; enjoying them in the beautiful setting of the local countryside, perhaps accompanied by a good glass of wine, possibly mulled. There are a large number of events happening during this period, and in addition one can arrange to visit the new PGI-status chestnut processing centre at Castagno d'Andrea (where the chestnuts are packed and labelled) or the water-mill at San Bavello, both of which are managed by the PGI Mugello Chestnut Association of San Godenzo. There will also be plenty to interest younger visitors, from the prickly husks of the chestnuts and the floury goodness of the nuts to delicious desserts based on chestnuts!
